Tahoma Girls Win Third Straight With Record 98.5 Points

For the third straight year, the Tahoma girls piled up a record number of points to win the Washington Class 4A team championship.

Led by seniors Aliya and Alisha Wilson, sophomore Adaji Osaro-Igwe and junior Alaina Brady, Tahoma continued to make history at the state meet at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.

Tahoma, which is located in Maple Valley, scored 98.5 points. The Bears are the first to three-peat since the Garfield teams of the 1980s.

Aliya Wilson, Osaro-Igwe and Alisha Wilson went 1-2-4 in the 100 meter finals for 23 points and they also teamed up with Brady for a dominant 46.97 win in the 4x100 relay.

Osawo-Igwe won the 200 meters in 24.60 seconds and Aliya Wilson was third.

Brady swept the 100-meter hurdles (14.23) and 300 hurdles (43.27) and placed fifth in the long jump.

On the boys side of 4A, Walla Walla, which finished a half point out of last year’s crazy four-way tie for the team title, captured its first state championship since 1953.

Jared McAlvey won the 300-meter hurdles in 37.43 seconds, placed fifth in the 110 highs and took six in the 200 meters. He also ran on a scoring 4x100 relay.

Patrick Utschinski bolstered the Blue Devils with his victory in the discus (180-1) and second place in the shot put.

Walla Walla won with 50 points and Tahoma was second with 47.

Camas senior Daniel Maton completed his sensational state meet career by winning the 800-1,600 double for the third consecutive year. Maton, a University of Washington signee, ran 4:06.07 for a US#1 in the 1,600 meters as he was challenged by Mt. Si’s Joe Waskom, who ran US#2 4:06.64.

Waskom came back to win the 3,200 meters in US#17 8:56.02. Luke Houser of Woodinville was second in 8:57.38.

Ethan Willems of Glacier Peak won the 4A boys 400 meters in 47.89 seconds and he was also third in the 200.

Deyondre Davis from South Kitsap won the 110 hurdles in 14.37 seconds and place third in the 300 hurdles.

Bowman Starr of Eastlake made 16 feet to win the pole vault.

Gabriel Shouman of Tahoma was one of three throwers over 190 feet in the javelin, winning the title with 199-4.

Taylor Marks of Hazen ran 56.71 seconds to win the 4A girls 400 meters.

In the 4A girls distance races, Issaquah sophomore Julia David-Smith won the 1,600 meters in 4:50.85 and Lake Stevens senior Taylor Roe won the 3,200 meters in a PR time of 10:18.22 as David-Smith was second in 10:21.15.

Roe also ran 2:11.90 to beat Bellarmine Prep freshman Ella Borsheim (2:12.93) in the 800 meters.

Beatrice Asomaning from Olympia won the discus with 146-7.

Sativa Rogers of Lewis and Clark won the long jump with a legal mark of 19-3.50. 

3A 

Sophomore Allie Janke of North Central was the dominant figure in the 3A girls distance races. She ran 4:43.60 to win the 1,600 meters to move up to US#5. Then she ran US#8 10:10.83 in the 3,200 meters, winning by nearly half a lap.

In a showdown between two of the nation’s top pole vaulters, West Seattle’s Chloe Cunliffe won the title with 14 feet – her third competition over 14 feet outdoors. Lianne Kistler of Ballard was second at 13 feet.

Senior Dorien Simon of Lakes won 3A titles in the 100 meters (10.71) and 200 meters (21.61) while running into a head wind for both finals. He also anchored Lakes to the 4x100 relay title (42.27).

Gig Harbor’s Jurrian Hering placed second to Simon in the 100 meters and won his second straight 110-meter hurdles title.

Spencer Barrera of Mt. Spokane won the 3A 400 (48.19) and anchored the team to victory in the 4x400 relay (3:20.98).

Kennewick’s Johan Correa won the 800 meters in 1:53.40 and he placed third in the 1,600. He anchored his team to third place in the 4x400 relay.

Ferndale’s Tallen Williams won the long jump with a legal 23-11.25 and he was second to Lincoln’s Javon Gray in the triple jump.

Junior Kate Jendrezak of Eastside Catholic won the 3A 400 meters in 56.46 seconds and also won the 800 meters in 2:11.72. She also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team (3:55.03).

Shorecrest sophomore Kiana Lino won the shot put with 44-10. Another sophomore, Ho’oponokauilani Fuiava from Central Kitsap, threw 146-1 to win the discus.

Jazlyn Romero from Hermiston OR became the first out-of-state track and field champion in Washington when she threw 144-11 to win the javelin.

Lyric Harris from Garfield won the girls triple jump with 39-1.50.

2A 

Junior Trey Knight of Ridgefield won the 2A titles in the shot put (63-4) and discus (187-6) for the second straight year.

Senior Taino Ferdinand from Burlington-Edison made a state-leading clearance at 6-10 to win the high jump. He also placed second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

Olivia Martin from Selah won the 2A 400 meters in 56.59 seconds. She was fifth in the 200.

Nadia Herring of Steilacoom won the long jump with 18-8.75w, won the 200 (24.65) and placed second in the 100. 

1A/1B/2B at Cheney 

Alma Manzo of Connell was a standout in the girls 1A meet, collecting four victories -- in the 100 meters (12.44), 200 (25.26) and the 400 (57.48), plus the long jump (18-1 on a tiebreaker).

Junior Naomi Smith of King’s won the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. 

Samuel Van Peursem from Cedar Park Christian won the 1A shot put (60-8) and discus (181-2).

Kendra Sasche of Okanogan threw 147-6 to win the girls javelin.  

Rosalie Fish of the Muckleshoot Tribal School, who was featured on DyeStat in the past week, won three gold medals by sweeping the 1B 800/1,600/3,200 and finishing second in the 400 meters. She also raised awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. 

Kaylee Sowle from Mary M. Knight jumped 5-8 to win the high jump and also won the long jump and triple jump and was third in the 100 meters. 

In the 2B meet, Matty Lagerway from La Conner edged ahead of Adrienne Washington of Asotin in the triple jump by a quarter inch, 37-1.75 to 37-1.50.

Jackson Atwood from Central Valley swept four wheelchair events with victories in the 100 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters. Hannah Dederick, also of Central Valley, won three wheelchair races.
